Neighborhood After-School Program
“Contardo Ferrini”

The Contardo Ferrini Neighborhood After-School Volunteer Association, hosted within the premises of San Giuseppe College, has been operating since 1969 in District 1 of the city of Turin.

The Association’s main activity is providing academic support and remedial education for lower secondary school students.

Its primary goal is to keep children and young people aged 6 to 16, who live in complex socio-economic situations, away from the streets—understood in their negative and unsafe sense—by offering them a healthy environment in which to experience positive socialization with their peers.

All activities are carried out under the guidance of a group of volunteers made up of high school and university students, who embody the Association’s motto “Educating by being educated”. This highlights the role of the after-school program as a true “school of life” for the volunteers themselves. Many of them, following this experience, have gone on to pursue careers in teaching or are engaged in the social sector.

The program is open to all children without distinction and, in addition to afternoon study sessions, offers sports activities, weekend and holiday outings, summer programs, artistic workshops, and community celebrations.

For many years, the After-School Program has participated in projects promoted by the Municipality of Turin and various foundations aimed at preventing school dropout (such as Provaci ancora, Sam! and Sam non va in vacanza). It also organizes Italian as a Second Language (L2) workshops and co-designs targeted educational interventions with schools and educational services to support children and families facing socio-economic difficulties.
